My work is comprised entirely of acrylic paint such as drops, skins and beads which are free from any traditional support. I create installations that explore boundaries between the synthetic and the organic through the use of acrylic paint that are joined together, dried, and then hung. As a result, a dialogue between the opposing forces occurs through continuous repetition and layering of pattern. Through this process, my pieces appear to breed and colonize the room—the artificial giving way to a natural process of insistent replication. My body of work exists in the combination of opposites not settling for a sole identity, but rather exploring their dualities.
Natural forces, such as gravity stretch the acrylic. The paint itself undergoes a transformative process, thus questioning its attributes of permanence and immutability. As the installation evolves, it flows throughout the room, connecting wall to floor to window, acclimating as it inhabits different architectural spaces. Pipes, corners, ceilings, windows and unexpected obstacles act as agents of exploration and freedom enabling the piece to express its individuality while at the same time shaping itself around and adapting to its environment. Whether thoughtfully integrated or intentionally absent, color is also an integral part of the creative process. At times I choose to eliminate it so the installation blends in with its background. Alternatively, I use bright and artificial tones to emphasize the plastic qualities of the medium. Organic and synthetic, vulnerable and strong, ephemeral and permanent—these juxtapositions fascinate me as they represent inherent traits in both nature and mankind that at times work both in concert and in opposition of one another. |
